PowerBlast is an annual Power
Soccer Tournament hosted by MASD in the
Fall season as part of the Desert Challenge
series of competitions for athletes with physical
disabilities. Any athlete with a permanent
physical disability involved in the sport
of Power Soccer can participate in the tournament.
Tournament competition includes one-on-one
competition, Division I Play and Division
II Play.

Annual AZ Junior Varsity Wheelchair Basketball
Tournament

The Banner Wheelchair Jr. Suns will welcome
teams from across the United States for the
event sponsored by Arizona Spinal Cord Injury
Association, Banner Wheelchair Suns and Arizona
Disabled Sports.
Arizona Paralympic Academy

Date - January 17, 2009
One-day clinic that will recruit and involve
youth and adults with physical and visual disabilities
in sports and physical activity regardless of
skill or interest level. The clinic provides
community-based sport program opportunities
for injured service members to continue sport
participation upon their release from military
treatment facilities.
The event is open to the public to stop by any
time throughout the day to educate themselves
about sports and recreation opportunities available
to people with physical disabilities.
Disability Sports Expo
Location - Phoenix Convention
Center

Date - March 4, 2009- 9 am
- 4 pm
After 10 years of providing a wonderful expo
including adaptive sports demonstration and
vendor opportunities, AzDS and St. Joseph's
Hospital have decided to join the event with
an even larger event. For the first time, the
Disability Sports Expo will be a part of the
Arizona Disabilities Expo featuring over 100
exhibitors, performances by Improbable Theater
Company, Brandy Liston Awards honoring community
leaders, Randy Werner Award of Excellence and
featuring keynote speaker, Randall Howe. Contact

Bowling Tournament for Physically Disabled

The Bowling Tournament is an annual one-day
event for people with physical disabilities
to compete in the sport of bowling. Adaptive
equipment available at the venue. Independent
bowlers welcome!

SkiAble
Location - Sunrise Ski Park

Date - February22 - 24, 2009
"SkiAble” provides alpine skiing instruction
to individuals with physical and/or sensory
impairments. The learn to ski program that includes
adapted ski equipment, certified ski instructors
and trained volunteers. The adapted ski equipment
available at Snowbowl includes both child and
adult Mountain Man Bi-Skis, Mono-skis, 3 and
4 Track and ski bras.
MASD contracts with the Breckenridge Outdoor
Education Center (BOEC) from Colorado to provide
adapted ski instructors and equipment for a
discounted weekend of fun and instruction. BOEC
is one of the finest adapted ski schools in
the United States and their expertise provides
an excellent opportunity for Arizona skiers
to experience a quality lesson.

Desert Challenge Regional Games

Date - April 24 - 26, 2009
MASD sponsors the Desert Challenge Games annually
during the month of April. The Desert Challenge
Games is Olympic style competition specifically
for athletes with physical disabilities.
The Desert Challenge Games are sanctioned by
Wheelchair Sports, USA, National Disabled Sports
Alliance, United States Association of Blind
Athletes and Disabled Sports, USA. Events include
Track & Field, Swimming, Table Tennis, Archery,
Cycling, Weightlifting, Bocce Ball and Wheelchair
Basketball.

Desert Challenge Air Pistol and Rifle Competition

The Desert Shoot Competition is an individual
sport including air pistol and air rifle competition.
The competition is hosted indoors in a quiet
environment for the all-important concentration
of each shooter. Athletes travel to Mesa from
across the United States to participate in
the annual event.

Training Camps and Clinics
MASD hosts numerous training opportunities throughout
the year. Former camps have included the BlazeSports
Adaptive Golf Camp, BlazeSports Track Clinic,
Wheelchair Table Tennis Clinic and Adaptive
Cycling.
